Must watch: Cosmos – Global warming case closed

June 2, 2014 by Pedro Hernandez Leave a Comment

Neil deGrasse Tyson’s Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey — which follows in the footsteps of Sagan’s 1980 masterpiece — closed the book on the so-called “debate” on global warming. Point by point, he shot down each of the counterarguments for reducing carbon emissions… using SCIENCE! (Sorry for the all-caps.) Sunday’s episode, “The World Set Free” tackles climate […]

Internet streaming is greener than DVDs

May 31, 2014 by Pedro Hernandez Leave a Comment

Go dematerialization! The  term, which sounds like what the transporters do in Star Trek, is one of the great benefits of the Internet. Instead of CDs, folks have turned to iTunes and Spotify. Rather than heft around a tome or two, they head to Amazon and order e-books for their Kindles. The data centers that serve […]

Xbox One, PlayStation 4 are more power hungry

May 19, 2014 by Pedro Hernandez Leave a Comment

Well this is a little disappointing, although not without precedent. Both Sony’s PlayStation 4 (PS4) and Microsoft’s Xbox One (the Kinect-less version pictured above, obviously) scarf down a lot more electricity than their immediate predecessors (their respective “slim” versions), according to a report from The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). In fact, they consume “two […]

Happy Earth Day 2014

April 22, 2014 by Pedro Hernandez Leave a Comment

Recycling an old graphic… It’s no Google Doodle — which rocks this year, by the way (yes, even the Dung Beetle) — but it’s from the heart. Here are some Earth Day themed tweets to get you started on this awesome day (updated throughout the day). Microsoft’s #carbon neutrality efforts highlighted along with #sustainability work […]

December 27, 2013 by Pedro Hernandez Leave a Comment

After a divorce and a foreclosure that claimed her 2,500-square-foot house, Macy Miller embarked on a dramatic DIY down-sizing. She rolled up her sleeves — learning as she went — and build a tiny house that not only looks amazing, but is roomy enough to share with a Great Dane. The kicker: Miller’s new home […]
