An eco-button for PC efficiency

Update: IP shenanigans?! Catch the drama over at techETA.

If you’re a savvy computer user, you’ve probably already tweaked your power settings. But some folks still need some help, and there’s no shortage of PC power management solutions that caters to them.

One such product is efo’s ECO Button. Pictured above, the USB device doubles as a physical button that forces your Windows PC into sleep mode. It’s actually a handy alternative to drilling down into start menu for the sleep function or reaching under your desk to press the power/sleep button. Plus, it emits a nice glow to make its efficiency enhancing presence known (and guilt you into powering down before you head to bed). But it’s the the software half of the product that shows the most promise, according to an informative review over at Hardware Bistro.

Though looking like something was plucked from the early 90’s school of web design, the software helps track energy savings and CO2 emissions reductions, which can climb up to 65 EUR (roughly $87 US) and 135KG of CO2 per year, according to efo. For eco-stat junkies, it’s a godsend. For others, it looks like a good way to dabble in Green IT and reduce energy costs. And at $14, the ECO Button should pay for itself in no time.
