Here come AMD’s six-core, ultra-low-power Opteron EEs – BetaNews

Today, as expected, the company is announcing stage 3 of its plan: the rollout of its first ultra-low-power six-core Opteron series, including the model 2419 EE, with 40 watts of average power consumption (ACP) clocked at 1.8 GHz. This time, AMD’s value proposition is this: Server centers that already have quad-core 75W Opteron-based units can replace them for dropped in 40W six-core units, and see better performance per watt while gaining two cores per socket in the process.

The Cleantech study concluded that purchasing three e-books per month for four years produces roughly 168 kilograms of CO2 throughout the Kindle’s lifecycle, compared to the estimated 1,074 kilograms of CO2 produced by the same number of printed books.

Met Office climate change supercomputer polluting the planet – Telegraph

The machine is capable of 1,000 billion calculations every second and is a key part of helping scientists predict the weather and climate change over the longer term.

However the “supercomputer” is also one of the country’s least green machines. It uses enough energy to power a small town – producing 12,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year – and has made the Met Office one of the worst public buildings in Britain for pollution in a new green league table.

Eron Zehavi, cofounder of Swagbucks.com, says since the Seed the Future redemption offer was offered starting three weeks ago (it’s called “Plant a Tree” on the redemption page), there have been about 20 to 25 redemptions per day toward the reforestation programs.
